Biotech & Life Sciences
Dr. Vaibhav Upadhyay is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) with nearly two decades of experience in medicine and medical research. He cares for patients with complex medical conditions in intensive care units and is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Pulmonary Medicine. His research is funded by National Institutes of Health. He has published articles as a primary author or co-author in Nature Immunology, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Cell, mBio, Cell Host and Microbe, and other major medical and scientific journals. He has been recognized by numerous research and teaching awards in addition to being funded through multiple private or public research grants.
His medical and doctoral degrees are from the University of Chicago where he studied the fundamental mechanisms by which the immune system changed the gut microbiome and promoted weight gain in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. After his doctoral studies, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical society and awarded the John Van Prohaska Award for Pritzker medical student most likely to excel in research, teaching, and clinical care, graduating from medical school with honors.
He did clinical training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCSF where he continues to see patients and run a research program. At UCSF he was awarded the Jeffrey Weingarten Award, awarded to the third-year resident most exemplary of a UCSF physician. He then continued in fellowship at UCSF, serving as Chief Fellow in his final year of fellowship and being awarded the Jeffrey Golden Outstanding Clinical Fellow award. He has been an Assistant Professor at UCSF since 2022. His active research addresses how gut microorganisms contribute to lung molecular function using genomics and metabolomics research approaches, animal models, and de-identified patient data.
Atoll Financial Group, Inc. benefits from his extensive background as a physician-scientist and his understanding of how that perspective fits into the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Dr. Upadhyay serves as an advisor for an artificial intelligence startup in the health care space in the Bay Area, and he is an alumnus of the 5th UCSF Global Entrepreneurship Cohort. His combined clinical and research backgrounds provide critical perspective in assessing the potential of research and development teams in the biotechnology and life sciences sector.
